Is Benfica at 16 cents value to win the 2027 Europa League
Polymarket has Benfica at 16¢ at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, to win the 2027 Europa League, a 16% implied probability, against a 10.4% coefficient-and-points share, a gap of 5.6 percentage points on the outright favourite in this field.
Benfica are not value at 16 cents to win the 2027 UEFA Europa League, the YES Polymarket showed at 16¢ at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, a 16% implied probability against a 10.4% share from UEFA club coefficients and the league-phase table, a gap of 5.6 percentage points. The heaviest input is a coefficient of 90.000, second in this field, multiplied by seven after six points from two wins. The rest of this note is the arithmetic, the limit of those two wins, and the prices that would make the reading wrong.
How a 90 coefficient and six points become 10.4%
UEFA's men's club coefficient list, updated on July 3, 2026, gives Sport Lisboa e Benfica 90.000, 14th in Europe and second among the 36 clubs in this league phase. Bayer Leverkusen are on 105.000, Juventus on 72.250 and AC Milan on 66.000. Those totals are on UEFA's own coefficient feed.
The BBC Sport table, read on October 19, 2026, has Benfica third after two of eight matchdays: six points, two wins, six goals for, one against, goal difference +5. Juventus lead on six points with +6. Leverkusen are also on six and have not conceded. Ten clubs are still perfect. Two matches is the whole form window.
Multiply each coefficient by league-phase points plus one. The extra point is a floor so a club on zero in October is not given a literal zero with six matchdays and a knockout still to come. Benfica's score is 90.000 times seven, which is 630. The same product across the 36 clubs sums to 6,062.667. Then 630 divided by 6,062.667 is 0.1039, or 10.4%. Take away the 16% on the 07:26 UTC contract of October 19, 2026, and the edge is −5.6 percentage points.
Five clubs have no line on the club list. Bournemouth, Sunderland, Torreense, NEC and OFI take one-fifth of the association coefficient, from the association list updated the same day. England's 119.519 divided by five is 23.9038, cut to 23.903, already Crystal Palace's own total. Portugal's 73.166 divided by five is 14.633. The Netherlands' 67.929 divided by five is 13.5858, cut to 13.585. Greece's 48.412 divided by five is 9.682. Change the floor from plus one to plus a half and Benfica moves only from 10.4% to 10.9%.
What 16 cents buys on the 2027 champion contract
The contract is Polymarket's event "UEFA Europa League: 2027 Champion". A Benfica YES pays 100¢ if Benfica win the 2026-27 tournament and nothing otherwise. At 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, the gamma record, updated at 07:23 UTC, showed 16¢, a 15¢ bid and a 17¢ ask. The last trade on the leg was 17¢. Cents on this board are the implied probability before fees, so 16¢ means 16%.
Volume on the event was $234,897 and liquidity about $591,449 at that 07:26 UTC print. Enough to read the favourite. A few thousand dollars can still shove a longshot, which is why the band around Benfica, 15¢ to 17¢, matters more than a single displayed cent.
Ignore placeholder legs left at 50¢ with empty books. The 36 named YES prices summed to 1.197 at the 07:26 UTC snapshot on October 19, 2026. Divide 0.16 by 1.197 and Benfica's proportional piece of the board is 13.4%. Buyers do not pay 13.4¢. They pay 16¢. The gap from 10.4% to 13.4% is 3.0 percentage points, close to noise on a two-match sample. The gap from 10.4% to the contract is 5.6, and that is the cleaner objection. Prediction markets were still a small slice of US sportsbook handle in the note on how that 8% figure was reached.
Juventus were 13.5¢, Milan 10.5¢, Leverkusen 10.5¢ and Bournemouth 10.25¢ at the same 07:26 UTC print on October 19, 2026. Formula scores are 8.3%, 4.4%, 12.1% and 2.8%. Only Leverkusen's +1.6 percentage points is positive, and 1.6 sits inside the floor's noise. The same public-arithmetic test sits on the 2027 Champions League outright and on a Serie A season price.
| Side | Market price | Implied prob | Estimate | Edge (pp) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Benfica | 16¢ | 16% | 10.4% | −5.6 |
| Juventus | 13.5¢ | 13.5% | 8.3% | −5.2 |
| Milan | 10.5¢ | 10.5% | 4.4% | −6.1 |
| Leverkusen | 10.5¢ | 10.5% | 12.1% | +1.6 |
| Bournemouth | 10.25¢ | 10.25% | 2.8% | −7.5 |

Is Benfica at 16 cents value to win the 2027 Europa League? Not on this contract. At 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, Polymarket's Benfica YES was 16¢, bid 15¢ and ask 17¢. The share pays 100¢ if Benfica win the tournament and nothing otherwise, so 16¢ is a 16% implied probability before fees. Set beside it, the estimate is 10.4%. UEFA's list of July 3, 2026, has the club at 90.000, and the BBC table on October 19 has them third on six points from two wins. Multiply 90.000 by seven and divide by 6,062.667, the same product for all 36 clubs. That is 630 over 6,062.667, or 10.4%, a gap of 5.6 percentage points. Divide 0.16 by the 1.197 sum of named YES prices and the proportional share is 13.4%, still 3.0 percentage points above 10.4%. Opta Analyst published 14.0% for Benfica on September 14, 2026, before these matchdays. The October price is above that rate as well.
Why six points and a Milan win are not 16%
The case for paying up is the start, and it is real. On September 16, 2026, Benfica won 2-0 at Milan. On October 15, 2026, they won 4-1 against Celtic. Those lines add to six goals for and one against, the BBC row. UEFA's standings are the competition record under it. A perfect record and a win at San Siro are why this YES is the shortest real price on the board at 16¢.
Domestically they are not collapsing. BBC Sport on October 15, 2026, had Marco Silva's side second in the Primeira Liga, behind Porto, after a 3-1 league loss to Porto, their first defeat since an opening qualifying reverse. Benfica's site carries a CMVM notice dated June 9, 2026, on the agreement with Silva. The 90.000 predates him. The six points are what this squad has added in the league phase.
"Looking at the Europa League, there are three, four, or five major European clubs there - clubs far more accustomed to the Champions League than to the Europa League."
Marco Silva, head coach, Benfica (BBC Sport, October 15, 2026)
He said that before Celtic. A coefficient of 90.000 says the same thing, that Benfica's ordinary habitat is the Champions League. The same interview refused the shortcut: those clubs are not "a sign of favoritism or that you're going to win the next game." The 4-1 followed. Four more matchdays did not.
Prices do not follow goal difference. Juventus lead on +6 at 13.5¢ at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026. Leverkusen have not conceded and are 10.5¢. Benfica are third at 16¢ on that print, 5.5 cents above a club with a higher coefficient and a cleaner defensive row. Milan's other result, from the BBC totals minus the 0-2, was a 4-0. Beating them is a good win. It is still one match.
Are six points from two wins enough to call Benfica at 16 cents value for the 2027 Europa League? No. The wins are already inside the 10.4%. Six points are why the multiplier is seven rather than four. The coefficient alone, 90.000 divided by 1,345.220, is 6.7%. Two wins lift that to 10.4%, about 3.7 percentage points, and they stop there. A buyer at 16¢ at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, pays for the coefficient and the perfect start, then pays 5.6 percentage points more than either input produces. Divide 0.16 by 1.197, the sum of the 36 named YES prices at that print, and the board's proportional piece is 13.4%, still 3.0 percentage points above 10.4%. Hold every other club's points fixed and give Benfica one defeat, and the share falls from 10.4% to 6.2%, so 16¢ gets worse. Opta's 14.0%, from 10,000 simulations on September 14, 2026, was a fuller path than two matchdays, and the live contract sits above that rate too.
Why the Bournemouth price shows the sum's soft spot
Bournemouth shows where the formula is blind. Their 23.903 is one-fifth of England's association coefficient, because the club has no European history. At 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, the YES was 10.25¢ against a 2.8% share, a wider gap than Benfica's. Treating that as a finding would call a Premier League debutant a trap at 10 cents. The floor is what fails.
"In their first-ever season in Europe, Bournemouth are the favourites to go all the way and win the Europa League in 2026-27."
Ali Tweedale, writer, Opta Analyst (Opta Analyst, September 14, 2026)
That line reported the Opta supercomputer before the league phase began. In 10,000 simulations Bournemouth won 14.3% of the time and topped the table in 15.1%. Benfica were at 14.0%, Leverkusen 10.2%, Sunderland 8.3%, Juventus 7.8%, Crystal Palace 7.3% and Milan 5.3%, all dated September 14, 2026. The October board has flipped the top two. Benfica are 16¢ and Bournemouth 10.25¢ at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026. Neither Opta's pre-season rate nor this two-game share prints 16% for Benfica.
Lift the English coefficients to Juventus's 72.250 and Benfica gets dearer, not cheaper. Bournemouth and Sunderland, on six points, would score 505.750 each. Palace, on three, would score 289. They score 167.321, 167.321 and 95.612 today, together 430.254. The new total is 1,300.500. Add the difference, 870.246, to 6,062.667 and the field sum is 6,932.913. Then 630 divided by 6,932.913 is 9.1%.
A 16% share with Benfica's score stuck at 630 needs the field sum down at 3,937.5, because 630 divided by 0.16 is 3,937.5. About 2,125 of everyone else's score would have to vanish. Olympiacos, at 62.250 times seven, are only 435.750 of that sum, roughly 7.2%. Removing them does not get Benfica to the 16¢ printed at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026. The market can still know things a coefficient misses, which is what Bournemouth's price is for. It does not follow that third-placed Benfica should be 5.5 cents shorter than unbeaten Leverkusen.
Where this bet breaks
The lean is that 16¢, the YES at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, is not value. It breaks only if one of these is on the page, not because the badge feels big.
- The YES price at 10¢ or lower. At 10¢ the implied probability is 10%, under the 10.4% share, so the gap versus the October 19, 2026, contract is gone. A print of 10.4¢ would tie the estimate.
- The formula printing 15% or higher. With the score still 630, the 36-club sum has to be 4,200 or lower, since 630 divided by 0.15 is 4,200. If the points change, redo it. A 15% share against a price still near 16¢ is noise.
- A defeat does not help the price. Drop Benfica from six points to three and hold everyone else. The score falls from 630 to 360 and the sum falls by 270, to 5,792.667. Then 360 divided by 5,792.667 is 6.2%. The 16¢ contract of October 19, 2026, would be further above the inputs.
- A newer coefficient, or Silva leaves. The 90.000 is dated July 3, 2026. If a later total on the same UEFA feed, run through this formula with that day's table, sits within a point or two of the live cents, the objection expires. A coaching change does not move the coefficient. It does stop these six points counting as evidence about this version of the team.
What to watch before the Frankfurt final
Matchday 3 is October 22, 2026, away to Omonia on UEFA's list as Omonia against Benfica. Omonia are also on six points, goal difference +4. A home win reshuffles the perfect-record group. That night moves the points input. It does not move the July coefficient.
Opta Analyst on September 14, 2026, put the league phase into mid-January and the final at Frankfurt's Waldstadion on May 26, 2027. Polymarket's own end is later, 03:59 UTC on June 19, 2027. Using the 16¢ of 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, after the league phase closes would be quoting this snapshot, not the market of that week.
Keep 10¢ and 16¢ in view. Under 10¢ this note is about a price that is gone. Still at 16¢ or higher on a later print, after Benfica drop points, the gap against the 10.4% share has grown. Event volume of $234,897 at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, is a long season, not a closing line, so a longshot jumping on a few thousand dollars is not news.
Martin O'Neill, after the 4-1, was talking about Celtic's second half rather than a futures price. Silva's bar, quoted below, is the stricter one.
FAQ
What are Benfica's odds to win the 2027 Europa League?
At 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, Polymarket had Benfica's YES on "UEFA Europa League: 2027 Champion" at 16¢, bid 15¢ and ask 17¢. That is 16% before fees. Juventus were 13.5¢, Milan and Leverkusen 10.5¢, Bournemouth 10.25¢. Volume was $234,897 and liquidity about $591,449. Named YES prices summed to 119.7%, so a rescale of Benfica is 13.4%.
Is Benfica at 16 cents value on Polymarket?
No. The share is 10.4% against a 16% contract at 07:26 UTC on October 19, 2026, a gap of 5.6 percentage points: 90.000 times seven, divided by 6,062.667. Versus the rescaled 13.4% the gap is 3.0 percentage points, still not value, and close to what two matches of noise can do. Opta's 14.0% on September 14, 2026, is also under the live price. The wins over Milan and Celtic explain the climb from a coefficient-only 6.7% to 10.4%. They do not explain 16¢.
What would make 16 cents a fair Benfica price?
A cheaper YES, or stronger inputs. At 10¢ or below on a later print, the October 19, 2026, objection ends because the contract is no longer the 16¢ seen at 07:26 UTC. Otherwise this formula has to reach about 15%. With the score held at 630, the field sum must fall to 4,200 or lower. One defeat, other points unchanged, cuts the share to 6.2% instead.
When is the 2027 Europa League winner decided?
Opta Analyst on September 14, 2026, set the final for May 26, 2027, at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt, after a league phase into mid-January. The Polymarket event ends at 03:59 UTC on June 19, 2027. Next for Benfica on the UEFA list is October 22, 2026, at Omonia.
The head coach has already set a higher bar than a two-game price.
"But that, in and of itself, isn't a sign of favoritism or that you're going to win the next game. We have to prove it, step by step, in this league phase and then in the knockout stage."
Marco Silva, head coach, Benfica (BBC Sport, October 15, 2026)
