Slips betting and how a sportsbook grades the slip

What is slips betting, once the paper coupon and the screen are the same record? It is the grading of a betting slip: the selection, the stake, the accepted price and the bet type, settled after the event under rules the customer was meant to see before the money moved. A £1 stake is graded on those same four fields.

Tattersalls Committee first issued rules for on-course bookmakers in 1886. The volume is what changed. In the year to March 2026, Great Britain still had 5,617 betting shops, down 3.6%, while remote casino, betting and bingo yield reached £8.3 billion.

What slips betting puts on the ticket

Slips betting is the grading of a betting slip, the record of a wager rather than a product with a separate name. On a British racecourse the slip is still a coupon at the joint. On a phone it is what the Gambling Commission, in Remote Technical Standard 2B, calls an electronic equivalent of a betting slip: the selections, the bet type and the accepted odds, shown before the customer commits. The screen has to say which odds format settles the bet. In the year to March 2026 the Commission put gross gambling yield from customer-facing gambling in Great Britain at £17.5 billion, up 4.4%, with 5,617 betting shops still licensed. That yield is what remained after winning slips were paid. It is not a price, and it does not say whether any one ticket won, pushed or was voided. The slip is what the book grades. The sport only supplies the result the rules point at.

Requirement 2B lists the selections, the bet type and the accepted odds, and it states that the format which takes precedence in settlement must be written into the rules. A board that prints American, decimal and fractional side by side has not yet chosen. The Commission's transaction standard binds remote licensees in Great Britain, under technical standards made on the Gambling Act 2005 and published on February 2, 2021.

Standard 1B is what happens after the grade. Customers must reach three months of gambling history without calling the licensee, and 12 months on request, including results and winnings paid. The standards set was updated through October 31, 2025.

An each-way slip is two stakes, not one

A single is one selection at one price. If it wins, the book pays the accepted odds on that stake. If it loses, the stake stays with the book. Nothing else on the slip needs a grade. A £10 win single has no second leg.

Each-way is two bets of equal stake, the definition in the glossary of the Rules on Betting reissued on May 17, 2010. A £5 each-way instruction puts £10 with the book, not £5. Rule 3 sets the place terms unless the book displays others. Fewer than five runners: all to win, so £5 each-way becomes a £10 win. Five to seven runners: one-quarter of the odds a place, for first and second. Eight or more: one-fifth of the odds, for the first three. Handicaps of 12 to 15: one-quarter of the odds, for the first three. Handicaps of 16 or more: one-quarter of the odds, for the first four.

One-fifth place terms settle that half at one-fifth of the accepted win price, on its own stake, and the win half at the full price. Both are graded. Posted terms on the joint replace the 2010 default.

Multiples are where the hold gets counted twice

A multiple on one slip is an accumulative bet: the return from one selection becomes the stake on the next, which is how Tattersalls Committee's glossary has defined it since May 17, 2010. Two legs at -110 American do not pay as if each were a coin toss. The price -110 implies 110/210, or 52.4%. If a book multiplies the exact decimal, 210/110, the two-leg price is 3.64 and a $10 stake returns $36.45 including the stake. Two fair even-money legs, each at 2.00, would return $40 on that same $10. The gap is the hold already inside each leg, counted twice. DraftKings reported a sportsbook net revenue margin of 7.1% on $53.6 billion of handle in 2025, up from 6.0% in 2024, in its annual report for the year ended December 31, 2025. That margin is what remained after winning slips were paid. It is a fact about the book, not a view on any ticket.

Flutter's quarter to June 30, 2026, filed on August 5, split mix from results. US structural revenue margin rose 40 basis points to 14.0% on World Cup same-game parlay mix, while reported US net revenue margin fell to 8.7%. Those two percentages, and DraftKings' 7.1% net revenue margin, are different measures. Lining the 14.0% up against the 7.1% would invent a gap the filings do not show.

"With our Super App, market making capabilities, proprietary exchange, and combos coming together, we intend to establish a leadership position in Sports Predictions before year-end."

Jason Robins, chief executive and co-founder, DraftKings (Q1 2026 results, May 8, 2026)

Combos, in that May 8, 2026 sentence, are a combination built as one position on a predictions product, not a football accumulator. The commercial point still sits on the slip. A book that builds the combination sets one price for the whole ticket. Same-game parlays are one version of that ticket, with correlated legs, and they are a pricing problem of their own rather than the definition of slips betting.

How slips betting grades a win, a push and a void

Four grades cover almost every fixed-odds slip. A win pays the accepted odds. A loss keeps the stake. A push returns the stake because the result landed on the number, ordinary on a whole-number spread and impossible on a half-point such as 7.5. A void returns the stake because the rules say the selection never stood: a non-runner, an abandonment, a postponement past the cutoff, or a price later called a palpable error.

Treating a push and a void as the same refund is the mistake. A push is a result. A void is a finding that the bet should not have been on the slip. The cash can look identical, 100% of the stake handed back, and the record is not.

DraftKings' Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025 names the void that is not a result. Palpable errors include "inverted lines between teams, or odds that are significantly different from the true odds of the outcome in a way that all reasonable persons would agree is an error." In some US jurisdictions where the company operates, a regulator must approve that void. The refund is a permission, not an automatic grade.

Remote Technical Standard 5A does not choose between push and void. It requires gambles to be settled in accordance with the operator's published terms. An incorrectly settled slip is supposed to be notified and corrected. The standard is about fidelity to the text the book actually published.

Tattersalls Rule 4 still trims a racing slip

On a British racecourse the published rule is often not the book's own prose. The Rules on Betting were last revised on May 17, 2010, after a consultation that drew 11 responses, and Gerald Gouriet QC edited them before adoption. They are displayed at each of 59 British racecourses. Bookmakers follow them unless a prominent notice says otherwise, a duty the preamble ties to Gambling Commission licence conditions under the Gambling Act 2005, in force from September 1, 2007.

Rule 4(C) is the withdrawal cut on a price taken that day. A horse from evens to 6/5 costs 45 pence in the pound of winnings. Longer than 14/1 costs nothing, and two or more withdrawals cannot exceed 90 pence. Starting price is spared unless no new market could form. A walkover voids the race.

Dead heats use another cut. Half the stake loses, and full odds apply to the rest. In a double, that reduced sum is the stake on the second selection. Ante-post slips struck before 10 a.m. on final-declaration day are sharper still: a single can be void if the race is abandoned or moved, while an accumulative ante-post bet stands on the horses that remain. Rule 5 then keeps that multiple open until the last event has been run.

Outright coupons wait on the same clock. A price on the World Cup 2026 outright market can sit ungraded after match one, and an MLB futures board at the 2026 trade deadline settles months later. Pools pay a dividend unknown at the strike. The Derby week handle report is that other sum.

What a $110 slip at -110 returns

BookSide on the slipAmericanDecimal shownFractional shown

Prices from the Covers.com NFL board retrieved October 9, 2026. The bet365 cell carried a timestamp of October 7, 2026, 11:32 UTC, for the Eagles at the Jaguars, listed at 9:30 on October 11. Eagles were the away side.

American odds need one conversion. A price of -110 means $110 at risk wins $100 of profit, a total return of $210, if the selection covers. Implied probability is 110/210, or 52.4%. The exact decimal is 1 + 100/110, or 1.909, and the fraction is 10/11. Covers printed 1.91 and 9/10 in the same cell. A price of 9/10 is 1.90, not 1.909. The three labels are cousins, not one price, which is why Standard 2B tells the book to name the format that settles the slip.

Philadelphia +7.5 at bet365's -110 returns $210 from $110 if the Eagles lose by 7 or fewer, or win. A loss by 8 or more takes the $110. No push is possible on 7.5. Both sides at -110 sum to 104.8% implied, a hold near 4.5% on a balanced book. October 7 sat four days before the listed kickoff, so this is not a closing line. A taken price is graded as accepted, unless the rules name starting price instead.

BetVictor priced both sides at -115, near 53.5% implied and a hold around 6.5%. William Hill had Jaguars -7.5 at -105, near 51.2%, with Eagles +7.5 at -114. One number, 7.5, carried three different holds. A parlay card that refuses to multiply the legs is a further price, and the rules decide which figure the slip locks.

The same slip meets two different rulebooks

Great Britain puts remote standards on licensees and racecourse rules on the joint, unless a notice opts out. US house rules sit where Tattersalls sits, under state regulators, with no single national text. DraftKings' 2025 report says some of those states must approve a palpable-error void. A bad price does not refund itself.

"The market shifts that we see in industry data trends, and this year is no different, are complex and will be down to a mix of factors that need more than one source to unpick."

Ben Haden, director of research and policy, Gambling Commission (industry statistics release, September 17, 2026)

£17.5 billion of total yield and £8.3 billion of remote yield still do not say how one book grades a void. In-play adds a timing grade. Standard 15 requires a notice that live pictures are delayed, so the accepted price can lag the field by seconds.

A spread listed for October 11 is graded that night. A tournament winner is not. That is Rule 5's clock on a season-long slip, and the text that matters is the rulebook of the book that took it.

FAQ

What is slips betting?

Slips betting is settlement of a betting slip, not a separate product. The slip holds the selection, the stake, the price and the bet type, which Standard 2B says must be clear before the customer commits. Gross gambling yield in Great Britain was £17.5 billion in the year to March 2026, up 4.4%. That is the books' yield, not one ticket's return.

How is a push different from a void?

A push returns the stake because the result hit the number, as when a spread of 7 is won by 7. A void returns it because the selection never stood: a non-runner, an abandonment, or a palpable error. The cash matches. The grade does not. Half-points such as 7.5 cannot push, and DraftKings' 2025 report says some US regulators must approve an error void.

Does one void leg void the whole accumulator?

Not on the Tattersalls text British on-course books follow unless they post another notice. Rule 4(A) keeps an accumulative ante-post bet and settles the remaining horses at those prices. Rule 5 leaves it open until the last event. A single can void while the multiple only shortens. A remote or US book can write the opposite rule.

What does -110 mean on a slip?

A price of -110 means $110 wins $100 of profit, $210 back in total, if the selection covers. Implied probability is 110/210, or 52.4%, a decimal of 1.909 and a fraction of 10/11. Two such sides sum to 104.8%, about a 4.5% hold. Bet365 showed that pair on Eagles +7.5 and Jaguars -7.5 on October 7, 2026.

Who writes the rules on a British racecourse slip?

Tattersalls Committee does, unless a different notice is on display. The text in force was implemented on May 17, 2010 and is shown at 59 British racecourses. A Commission licence condition requires that notice. The body dates from 1886 and can hear on-course disputes. Remote slips follow the licensee's own terms under Standard 5A.

A spread graded on the night and an outright left open for months are the same object with different clocks. The instrument that is not a slip, a contract settled on a written source, is counted against sportsbook volume in how prediction markets' share of US sports handle was counted.
