How the 2026 Worlds play-in works: four teams, one berth

Four teams enter the 2026 League of Legends World Championship play-in, and the bracket is built to send one of them on. The dates are October 15 to 18, 2026, at the Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles, and every series is a best-of-five under Fearless Draft, the rule that retires a champion once either side has selected it. The other three teams are finished with the tournament before the rest of the field has played a game in Texas.

Four teams, six series, one berth

The 2026 League of Legends World Championship play-in is a four-team double-elimination bracket in which every series is a best-of-five and only one team advances. Riot's event-specific ruleset states that the bracket holds six best-of-five matches: two in the first round, two in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth. The team that wins the last match is the side that moves on. The other three leave in a fixed order, 19th, then 18th, then 17th, and they do not play again at this World Championship. The same ruleset dates the stage as October 15 to 18, 2026. LoL Esports has set it at the Riot Games Arena in Los Angeles, with each day scheduled to begin at 11am Pacific Daylight Time. Survival here is one team out of four, not the cluster of berths an older group-style play-in used to hand out.

That bracket is section 4.1.1 of the 2026 World Championship event-specific ruleset, version 1.0. Clause 4.1.1.1.5 later says the round-four winner advances to the Bracket Stage. The opening line of section 4.1.1, and the seeding list, place that team in the Swiss stage. The week in Los Angeles follows the seeding.

How a loss moves, and where it ends the event

Round one is two matches. Winners meet in round two, match one. Losers meet in round two, match two, and that loser finishes 19th.

The winner of the winners' match goes straight to round four, the last series of the week. The loser of that match drops into round three against whoever survived the losers' match. Round three eliminates its loser in 18th. Its winner takes the other place in round four.

Round four is one best-of-five, not two. The loser finishes 17th, and that includes a team whose only series loss of the week is this one. Double elimination sounds like a cushion. In the final series, the cushion has already been spent.

An unbeaten side plays three series: round one, the winners' match, and round four. A side that loses round one and still takes the berth plays four: the losers' match, round three and round four, inside October 15 to 18. Section 4.4.2 lets officials move a match inside a day or onto another date.

The berths belong to seeds, and then to four teams

Section 4.2.1 prints seeds, not organisation names. The play-in holds the second qualifier from the Brasileiro de League of Legends (CBLOL) and the third qualifiers from the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS), the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) and the League of Legends Championship Pacific (LCP). Section 2.2.1 sets the wider field at 19 teams: four berths each for the League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) and the League of Legends Pro League (LPL), three each for the LEC, the LCS and the LCP, and two for CBLOL. The other 15 start in the Swiss stage.

Riot's primer lists Karmine Corp, Cloud9 Kia, MVK Esports and FURIA among the qualified teams, with LOS named beside FURIA for CBLOL. The play-in line on that page still prints a CBLOL placeholder, because it was written for a draw after the final. Strafe, in a piece updated on October 12, 2026, reported that LOS beat FURIA by three games to two on October 10, took the direct berth, and that the draw paired Karmine Corp with Cloud9 Kia and FURIA with MVK Esports.

Section 4.3.1 says those pairings come from a random draw. There are no pools, and no bar on which regions can meet. The order of the draw does not set the order of play. Any of the four could have opened against any other. Swiss round one does the opposite: it uses pools, and it keeps teams from the same region apart. The play-in was not given that protection.

Riot used this shape at the 2026 Mid-Season Invitational, where the survivor joined a later bracket. Our MSI 2026 play-in report recorded T1 going through without dropping a game. The Worlds winner does not receive a knockout place. The berth is a pool slot.

Fearless Draft locks the champion, not the ban

Fearless Draft at the 2026 League of Legends World Championship means a champion selected by either team cannot be selected again by either team for the rest of that series. LoL Esports' format film, posted on October 5, 2026, says every best-of series at Worlds uses that full version of the rule, the same way the 2025 event did. A ban does not travel. A champion banned in game one, and never played, can still be selected later. A champion that was played is gone for both sides, whatever the result of the game. The play-in is a best-of-five from the first match to the last, so the lock is in force for the whole week in Los Angeles, not only for a final. Four games put 40 champions on the rift before a fifth game starts, ten selections a game, and that fifth game still has its own ten bans.

Most series never reach a fifth game. A sweep stays inside the opening draft. The strain shows up when a team forces game four or game five, and Los Angeles has no best-of-one that would let a side skip it.

Kim Jeong-gyun, head coach of T1 and known as kkOma, put the constraint in one line when Dot Esports spoke to him at Worlds 2025.

"If you go into a best-of-five, you actually have to focus on making the right decision in that instant."

Kim Jeong-gyun, head coach of T1 (Dot Esports)

He separated games that can still look prepared from the later games, which do not. A short champion pool can win game one and still run out of answers by game five. The series is not over until one side has three wins, so those later games sit inside the same lock.

Yoon Sung-young, known as Homme, described the habit the rule removes. He was head coach of Top Esports when he said it. The same Dot Esports piece, published on March 16, 2026, noted that he had since moved to Hanwha Life Esports.

"In the past, when the opponent wasn't able to catch those high-tier picks, we could take those and abuse it more. But you can't do that anymore."

Yoon Sung-young, then head coach of Top Esports (Dot Esports)

The event is on patch 26.20. Section 5.1 lets officials disable a champion, an item, a rune or a skin at any time, including during a match. Officials can shrink that list again with a disable order. A series plan built around one champion still has to survive the restricted list posted before the stage.

Who chooses a side, and who chooses both

For every match except play-in round four, one team holds the Right of First Selection in game one. The ruleset calls it RoFS. That team chooses either its place in the draft or its side of the map, blue or red. The opponent takes the choice that was left. In rounds one, two and three, that game-one right is assigned by a coin flip, or by draw order if officials use that instead.

From game two onward, the loser of the previous game receives RoFS, and both selections are due within five minutes. Lose game one, and the first choice in game two is yours.

Round four is the exception. The team that won round two, match one, receives the Right of Dual Selection for game one of the last series. It chooses both the side and the draft slot. The opponent takes both as given. That is the recorded reward for arriving unbeaten. It is not a game already in the bank, and the clause does not schedule a second final if that team then loses.

A lot of readers hear "double elimination" and picture a grand final the upper team can lose once and replay. This document does not say that. An undefeated week buys a dual choice in one draft. It does not buy another series.

What 17th, 18th and 19th are actually paid

The pool is $5 million, shared by the table in section 4.5. Nineteenth is 0.6 per cent, $30,000. Eighteenth is 0.8 per cent, $40,000. Seventeenth is 1 per cent, $50,000. Those three cheques are the only prizes fixed by losing in Los Angeles. The title share is 20 per cent, $1 million, and second is 16 per cent, $800,000. Neither figure is available from the play-in on its own.

Nothing extra is paid for surviving the play-in. The survivor's money is whatever finish it earns after Allen. Finishing 17th rather than 19th is still a $20,000 gap, for two teams that both missed the main event. Where a book may offer esports, the legal age is 18 in Great Britain under the Gambling Commission, and 21 in New Jersey. The table is a schedule of prizes. It is not an instruction to take either side of a series. The teams involved also sit inside the commercial rules covered in Riot's betting sponsorships on Tier-1 League and Valorant teams.

Other world championships assign places before a draft is played. Valve named seven direct invites for The International 2026 and folded Europe into one qualifier, set out in our note on those invites. This berth works the other way. It exists only after the last series in Los Angeles.

The pool the winner joins in Allen

The survivor does not name a Swiss opponent on the stage. Section 4.3.2.1.4 places the play-in winner in pool 4 with the LCP second seed, the LPL fourth seed and the LCK fourth seed. The primer names those three as CTBC Flying Oyster, Shanghai Invictus Gaming Meituan and Dplus Kia. In round one, pool 4 is drawn against pool 1, the first seeds of the LCK, the LPL, the LCS and the LEC. Pool 2 meets pool 3. Teams from the same region cannot be paired in that opening round. If a draw would create that pairing, or force it later, the team moves to the next open slot.

Dates in section 4.4.1 put the Swiss stage on October 23 to 26 and October 28 to 31, 2026. LoL Esports placed those matches at the Credit Union of Texas Event Center in Allen, Texas, when it moved the play-in to Los Angeles and left the longer stages in Texas. Quarter-finals run November 3 to 6 in the same building, and the semi-finals are November 7 and 8. The final is on November 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The round-one Swiss draw follows the matches on October 18.

Section 4.1.1.1.5 says the winner of round four advances to the Bracket Stage, and the schedule uses that phrase for the knockout rounds. The opening line of section 4.1.1 says the top team advances to the Swiss stage. The pool list names the play-in winner in pool 4. The seeding clause is the one to trust. A team does not skip Allen because one sentence kept an older label.

FAQ

How many teams advance from the 2026 Worlds play-in?

One. The event-specific ruleset seeds four teams into a best-of-five double-elimination bracket and advances the team that comes out on top. The other three finish 19th, 18th and 17th, in that order. On the prize table those places pay $30,000, $40,000 and $50,000 from a $5 million pool. The survivor's prize is not set in Los Angeles. It depends on how far that team goes after October 18.

Is every play-in series a best-of-five?

Yes. The bracket is six best-of-five matches, not a mix of shorter series. Round one is two matches, round two is two more, and rounds three and four are one each. A match ends when one team has won three games. Fearless Draft applies throughout, because the rule is written for a series rather than a single game. There is no best-of-one on the Los Angeles schedule.

What does Fearless Draft remove during a series?

A champion that either team selects cannot be selected again by either team until that series ends. A ban does not lock a champion for a later game. LoL Esports' format film, posted on October 5, 2026, says every best-of series at this Worlds uses the full version of the rule. If a series reaches a fifth game, the first four games have already used 40 champions, and the fifth game still applies its own ten bans.

Does the upper-bracket team get another series if it loses the final?

No. Round four is a single best-of-five. The loser is 17th, even when that loss is the team's first of the week. The recorded reward for winning the upper match is the Right of Dual Selection in game one, both the side of the map and the place in the draft. It is not a one-game lead, and the ruleset does not schedule a second final.

Kim Jeong-gyun, T1's head coach, described the games this bracket is built to reach, speaking to Dot Esports at the previous World Championship.

"But from games four and five, whether it be macro or your picks, you always end up improvising. You always have to be prepared for all the variables that can be thrown at you."

Kim Jeong-gyun, head coach of T1 (Dot Esports)
