Betfred to close 132 shops as UK gambling tax hikes bite

Betfred is consulting on closing 132 betting shops, with more than 600 jobs at risk, blaming April’s near-doubling of remote gaming duty — and is now eyeing slot-machine arcades.

Betfred will close 132 of its UK betting shops, with more than 600 jobs at risk, after the operator said the UK’s gambling tax rises left it “no choice”. The Warrington-based bookmaker opened a consultation with affected staff on August 1, 2026, and the closures are expected from September 2026, leaving around 1,100 shops trading. The move lands four months after remote gaming duty jumped from 21% to 40%, with a second tax rise due in 2027.

Key Facts:

• A new 25% remote betting duty, up from 15%, takes effect in April 2027, adding a second wave of cost pressure — iGaming Business
• Around 1,100 Betfred shops will remain after the restructure, with consultations opened on August 1, 2026 — iGaming Business
• Betfred is exploring an expansion into Adult Gaming Centres, with no final decisions taken — GamblingNews

Why is Betfred closing 132 shops?

The company points squarely at the fiscal environment. The November 2025 Budget nearly doubled remote gaming duty to 40% from April 1, 2026, and a separate rise in general betting duty for online wagers — from 15% to 25% — follows in April 2027. Layered on top are higher employer National Insurance contributions and wage inflation, which fall heavily on a labour-intensive, shop-based business.

“It is with deep regret that we have today started a consultation with colleagues working in more than 130 of our shops regarding a proposal to close those locations. We have tried hard to protect all our sites and the colleagues who work in them, but the combined impact of higher employer National Insurance contributions, wage inflation, increases in gambling taxes and wider economic uncertainty has left us with no choice,” said Joanne Whittaker, Chief Executive of Betfred. Whittaker added that the affected shops had been well run and that the priority now is supporting affected colleagues.

What does it mean for the wider industry?

Betfred is not an outlier — it is the third major operator to shrink its retail footprint this year. Evoke, the owner of William Hill, confirmed around 200 store closures in April 2026 and linked them directly to the tax increases. Entain closed 39 Ladbrokes shops in Ireland in April, cutting 226 jobs, before announcing 500 global role reductions in July.

Operators have long warned that steep duty rises can drive some customers towards unregulated sites — a concern the regulator has acted on, having launched a dedicated Illegal Markets unit as black-market betting estimates reached £16.6 billion.

There is a consumer-protection dimension too. Betfred was fined £900,000 by the UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) in July 2026 over safer gambling shortcomings, and any pivot into machine-led venues will keep it under the regulator’s microscope. For shop staff and their communities, the immediate impact is measured in jobs, not duty rates.

What happens next?

According to GamblingNews, Betfred is exploring an expansion into Adult Gaming Centres (AGCs) — gambling arcades built primarily around slot machines — with a potential focus on the North of England. Some closing betting shops could be converted, subject to licensing approval, and no final decisions have been made. If it proceeds, Betfred would reportedly become the only retail bookmaker operating in both sectors.

The staff consultation runs through August 2026, with closures expected from September. The bigger test arrives in April 2027, when the 25% remote betting duty takes effect. Further estate reviews across the sector look likely.
