Series price: how a book builds one best-of-seven number

A series price is the one number a sportsbook posts on which team wins a best-of-seven. The 2026 NLCS board shows how that number is built, then rebuilt after a single win.

ESPN put DraftKings' series price for the 2026 National League Championship Series (NLCS) at Dodgers -160 and Brewers +130 on October 11, 2026, in a card time-stamped 6:24 a.m. ET. That figure is the single number for a best-of-seven, not the moneyline on Game 1, and FOX Sports had the same book the other way on October 12: Brewers -130, Dodgers +110, with Milwaukee leading 1-0.

A series price is one number for four wins

A series price is the sportsbook's one price on which team wins a best-of-seven, and it is not the moneyline for any single game. One team has to take four wins before the other does. ESPN's championship-round card, published at 6:24 a.m. ET on October 11, 2026, gave DraftKings' price as Dodgers -160 and Brewers +130, before Game 1 at American Family Field in Milwaukee. American odds with a minus sign state the stake that wins $100 of profit, so -160 means $160 staked to win $100. Divide that stake by the stake plus 100 and the implied probability is 160/260, or 61.5%. The plus price is the profit on a $100 stake, and the same division puts the Brewers at 100/230, or 43.5%. Added together the two sides come to 105.0%. Those extra five percentage points are the overround, and they are why 61.5% is not a fair chance of Los Angeles advancing.

Game 1 that same morning was a different market. ESPN had the Dodgers at -107 and the Brewers at -113 on the moneyline, with a run line of Dodgers -1.5 at +164 and a total of 6.0 runs. Those three numbers settle on one night in Milwaukee. The longer number settles only when one team reaches four wins, which on this card could be as early as a sweep or as late as Monday, October 19.

The same object showed up on an NBA board in May, when the Knicks carried a -245 series price before Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals. That figure was a price on a fixture. The arithmetic below is how a desk gets to any such number, whether the sport is baseball in October or basketball in May.

The paths a best-of-seven actually prices

From 0-0 the series ends in four, five, six or seven games, and the fourth win has to land in the last one. There is one way to sweep, four ways to win in five, ten ways to win in six and 20 ways to win in seven: 35 sequences for one team, 70 for both.

If every game had the same Dodgers win probability, call it p, the series chance is the sum of four terms: p to the fourth, then four times p to the fourth times (1-p), then ten times p to the fourth times (1-p) squared, then 20 times p to the fourth times (1-p) cubed. At p of 0.54 the sum is about 58.7%. At p of 0.50 it is 50%. A modest edge in the single game becomes a larger edge across a race to four, and a huge single-game favourite is not required to produce a short price.

Home field stops the games being copies of each other. ESPN's October 11 card put Games 1 and 2, plus Games 6 and 7 if needed, with the better seed, which in this NLCS is Milwaukee. Games 3 to 5 are in Los Angeles on October 14, October 15 and October 16. A real desk prices each remaining game on its own starter and its own park, then adds up the sequences. The flat p is only a ruler. It tells you what sort of game-win rate sits inside the posted number. It is not the worksheet the trader posts.

That ruler still disciplines the October 11 number. Carry the implied probabilities one more decimal place, 61.54% and 43.48%, and they sum to 105.02%. Scale them back in proportion, 61.54 divided by 105.02, and the no-vig Dodgers series chance is 58.6%. A flat game-win rate near 54% produces a series chance of that size. Treating -160 as a heavy series favourite misreads the board: once the margin is lifted, the price is a 58.6% series chance, not a procession.

Converting the series price of -160

Decimal odds are the total return per one unit staked, stake included. A minus American price converts as 1 plus 100 divided by the stake figure, so -160 is 1.625, which rounds to 1.63. A plus price converts as 1 plus the price divided by 100, so +130 is 2.30. The $160 that wins $100 of profit returns $260, and 260/160 is the same 1.625. One conversion does both jobs: the probability and the payout multiple.

The other series on that ESPN card was not a photocopy. Cleveland were +140 and Tampa Bay were -170, a shorter favourite than Los Angeles at -160. Each matchup gets its own game probabilities, then a shade until the implied total exceeds 100%.

How the series price moved after a 2-1

Milwaukee won Game 1 by 2-1 and led the series 1-0. ESPN's game story had Brice Turang homering off Tarik Skubal in the fourth and Luis Lara driving in a run with a single in the fifth, with Jacob Misiorowski and four relievers holding Los Angeles to one run. The Brewers also snapped a seven-game postseason skid against the Dodgers. That result is the input. The posted number is the output.

"A 2-0 sinker in, I'm going to live with that left-on-left. He put a good swing on it."

Tarik Skubal, starting pitcher, Los Angeles Dodgers (ESPN)

A series price is rebuilt after every completed game, because one win deletes the sequences in which that team was swept and changes how many paths remain. FOX Sports updated its DraftKings card at 11:45 p.m. ET on October 11, 2026, and stated the price as of October 12 at Brewers -130 and Dodgers +110, with Milwaukee leading the NLCS 1-0. The minus price converts as 130/230, or 56.5% implied for the Brewers, and +110 converts as 100/210, or 47.6%, for the Dodgers. The pair sums to 104.1%, a slightly tighter overround than the 105.0% ESPN published on the October 11 card. Remove that margin in proportion and Milwaukee's no-vig series chance is about 54.3%, up from 41.4% on the morning of Game 1. The move is the win counter plus a fresh view of the games still left, and neither price names a score.

Under a flat Brewers game-win rate near 46%, the rate that matched the October 11 no-vig price, would have lifted Milwaukee to about 58% once they led 1-0. The posted number moved by less than that full mathematical bump. The win counter is only part of the posted number. The desk also changed its view of the games still left, which were not seven identical coin flips to begin with: Game 2 was still in Milwaukee, and the next three were scheduled for Los Angeles.

Data sourced from ESPN, October 11, 2026, 6:24 a.m. ET, and FOX Sports, updated October 11, 2026, at 11:45 p.m. ET, for DraftKings prices as of October 12. Minus prices use stake/(stake+100). Plus prices use 100/(price+100). Unrounded two-way implieds sum to 105.0% and 104.1%. The seven correct-score implieds sum to 114.9%.

Dodgers in four is missing from that correct-score list, and it should be. Milwaukee already had a win, so a Los Angeles sweep was no longer a possible settlement. The correct-score board is that two-way price broken into lengths, conditional on the score that already exists. FOX Sports also translated Brewers -130 as a $10 stake returning $17.69 in total, which is $7.69 of profit: 10 times 100/130. The two-way price and the length board are the same tree, sold twice, at two different margins.

Where the margin sits, and who regulates the book

The seven correct-score prices in the table sum to 114.9% implied, an overround of about 15 percentage points. The two-way price the same morning was about four points over 100%. The series price is the tight number. The length board is where this book widens the hold, and a reader who treats those seven prices as a fair distribution of remaining series lengths is reading the margin as if it were a probability.

Company-level hold is a third number again. The American Gaming Association said on February 26, 2026, that state-regulated sports betting revenue in 2025 was $16.96 billion, up 22.8%, on a handle of $166.94 billion, up 11.0%. Divide 16.96 by 166.94 and the year's revenue is 10.2% of handle. The association's July 2026 revenue tracker, published September 24, 2026, put sports betting revenue at $1.27 billion on a handle of $11.60 billion. Divide 1.27 by 11.60 and that month's revenue is 10.9% of handle. Neither figure is the overround on one NLCS board. Parlays and multi-way boards pull a book's annual hold above the four or five points visible on a two-team series.

When handle moves, the earnings estimates move with it. That is what sat behind the trim to DraftKings and Flutter estimates after US handle slipped, a business result rather than a single series. A season-long points market, such as the NFL 2026 win totals with the Ravens and Rams at 11.5, is not a race to four wins either. Nor is a futures board. The futures market around Tarik Skubal at the 2026 trade deadline was a many-outcome contract. He happened to start Game 1 of this NLCS. That does not turn his futures price into this NLCS number.

"These record revenues and tax contributions demonstrate the broad appeal of regulated gaming markets and why strong state oversight remains essential as our industry evolves."

Bill Miller, president and chief executive, American Gaming Association (American Gaming Association, February 26, 2026)

The prices in the table are DraftKings numbers as ESPN and FOX Sports published them. They are not a retail board at American Family Field, and they are not an instruction. In New Jersey, sports wagering is regulated by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. A series price of this kind is offered by operators under the state licence that covers the account, which is a different fact from which city is hosting Game 1. Once the series ends, the ticket is graded on which team reached four wins, the settlement question in how a sportsbook grades the slip.

ESPN's October 11 card listed a possible Game 7 for Monday, October 19, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET in Milwaukee. That is the last date on the published schedule at which this series price could still be a live market, and any later best-of-seven is a new tree, with four wins and a fresh set of game probabilities. The margin is chosen again.
